Projects for 2014

Over the next few months I am looking to develop some of the projects listed below. These are in early stage development and thought I would use this blog site as a means of sharing information throughout the process.  As each project grows (or dies) I will post the new details here. I am particularly keen to make contact with people, organisations and artists I do not currently know and hope that sharing information at an early stage may stimulate interest and new creative opportunities.

To begin this process I have provided brief outlines in this post but in future will create a page for each project. Please get in touch by email - studio@andrewwilliams.net or projects@randomline.co.uk  if you feel you may have something to offer in any capacity or require more details.

Potential Projects for 2014/15:

PROMETHEUS [working title]
Creation & Directions of a large scale outdoor multi media performance for UK tour.

An original, multi-media creative performance piece based on the Prometheus myth.  This explores our relationship to technology and science through the character of Prometheus and his gift of fire to humans and his subsequent punishment by Zeus. Underlying this will be the notion that Prometheus represents human striving (particularly in the quest for scientific knowledge), the risks of this overreaching and the possibility of unintended consequences.

Key to this work will be the fact that, whilst a touring performance, each presentation will be influenced and informed by the local built environment. No two performances will ever be the same.

Video still from development files for Prometheus.
I am looking to create featureless face which will act as the digital narrator. Not sure about this one yet, but still working on ideas.

Prometheus will be suitable for touring to any city, urban or town setting. It will use the built environment in each performance space – the architecture and topology of the location becoming the performance’s set. The use of height for the performers is important as directing peoples’ attention up above the normal street level view experienced on a daily basis, will offer everyone a new perspective on the place in which they live. Placing musicians on rooftops, balconies and higher areas has many advantages. It provides natural diffusion of the sound which, while being supported by creative amplification, will vary from location to location. It allows for focal points for lighting and projection. There will be no need for a touring set ensuring the greatest flexibility of performance, so that the audience experience is one that is unique to their location.

Pyrotechnics add a further height aspect and, by the very nature of their movement, they provide another level to the “surround experience”.  Other aspects of the performance could include hot air balloons, which would become aerial projection screens, each becoming a character in the story and fire sculptures.

This project is being developed by Sinfonia Viva in partnership with Feste and Dada.

TRAJECTORY
Development of the material created for the successful pilot project held at Leicester University Arts Centre in November 2013. I am currently exploring potential partnerships including Installation Venues, artists and performers with an interest in reflecting aspects of space research within their work, and (of course) sources of funding.

Trajectory is being developed in partnership with Leicester University

DIGITAL MEDIA + PERFORMANCE
A research & development project linking media, technique, philosophy and performance practice within physical and digital environments. Currently seeking interesting performers (dance & sound especially, but not exclusively) in the UK with an interest in pushing the relationship between digital media and performance.

SENSORY EDUCATION.
Further developing and researching material suitable for working with people with Profound, Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD). Seeking partnerships with educational resources, schools and possibly higher education.

The sensory education research project is being developed by Random Line and is funded by Lloyds TSB Foundation.

If any of the potential projects listed above is of interest, in any capacity, please get in contact.
